My name is Dr. Denise Flavin, and I am honored to serve as the new principal of CA Frost Middle High School. Our vision is to build a school community where every scholar feels supported, challenged, and inspired to grow—not only in academics but also in personal wellness, confidence, and independence.

We are committed to helping our scholars become successful, engaged learners. Through hands-on experiences in both classrooms and outdoor learning spaces, our scholars connect every subject to real-world environmental stewardship. We believe every scholar’s skills can grow with effort, practice, and perseverance. Our staff encourages scholars to take ownership of their learning, make thoughtful choices, and take responsibility for their actions. They are challenged to think critically, work collaboratively, and solve problems creatively.

As a community, we foster empathy, inclusiveness, and well-being. We are dedicated to supporting our Frost family as they become confident, capable, and compassionate learners.

CA Frost Middle High School is uniquely situated on the west side of Grand Rapids, allowing us to take advantage of our own campus grounds and the city as a whole. Our 6th-12th grade scholars regularly participate in field trips, mentorships, and environmental experiences within and across grade levels. By encouraging collaboration and community building throughout the school, we help our scholars foster a growth mindset academically and socially. Through partnerships with community organizations and each other, we ensure that our scholars remain strong stewards of the environment and their community simultaneously.

We are a model school where equity and inclusion are infused in every aspect of our school landscape for all scholars and staff. At CA Frost, biases are recognized, challenged, and eliminated to create a supportive and inclusive environment so that barriers to success are removed.

Environmentally Integrated Curriculum

Is your child a nature lover? Do their interests lead them to exploring the great outdoors? Then they will love learning at CA Frost, a school where we take pride in bringing scholars’ love of nature to their everyday learning experiences.

The staff at CA Frost incorporates environmental science into all subject areas, including reading, math, social studies, language arts, and fine arts. Examples of projects with an environmental science focus include creating new animal habitats, developing a field guide to trees, researching alternative energy, and participating in school-wide environmental projects.

Hands-On Learning

Scholars have opportunities to continue their learning through a variety of after school clubs and experiences. C.A. Frost is home to Middle School and High School Robotics teams, numerous clubs and middle school athletics, National Honor Society, and more. Middle School athletics are popular choices for our 6-8th grade scholars as they can participate in fall, winter and spring sports.

Field Experiences

Day Trips: scholars in every grade take exciting field trips to help them connect their learning to the real world. Examples of these trips include visiting a recycling center, the Highlands at BNC, Saugatuck State Park, the Lake Michigan Coast, downtown Grand Rapids, multiple college campus visits and more.

Overnight Camping: Grades 6-12 participate in overnight camping trips. scholars begin with trips close to home at places like The Highlands through Blandford Nature Center and grow to participate in wilderness adventures at Pictured Rocks, Wilderness State Park, and Sleeping Bear Dunes. 6th grade scholars go to Camp Henry, 7th grade scholars attend Sleeping Bear Dunes, 8th grade scholars attend South Manitou Island. A variety of options are available to high school scholars from Wilderness State Park, Leelanau Environmental Camp, Mitchell State Parks, and various places for Senior trips.

Preparing Our Scholars for the Real World

At CA Frost, we encourage our upperclassmen to take dual enrollment classes through Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), our AP Environmental Science class, and world language classes. As a graduating scholar of Grand Rapids Public Schools, your child will also be offered the GRCC Promise Zone Scholarship, a scholarship that allows qualifying high school graduates an opportunity to pursue an academic, certificate, or job-training program at Grand Rapids Community College for free.

We have incorporated distance learning for years and are poised to be a leader in the district as a blended model of new technologies and old practices, giving our students the best of both worlds. Our 1-to-1 student technology device approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to learn inside and outside the classroom.

Located at 1417 Covell Ave. NW, C.A. Frost Middle High School is nestled into the heart of Grand Rapids’ west side. The school grounds provide our own trail system (close to two miles of finished/unfinished trail), an on-site greenhouse, and many current and future sites of small gardens and environmental projects. We are also the proud home of a restoration project that, following the removal of an old and damaged drain, resulted in the creation of a daylight stream and new ecosystem for local wildlife and vegetation.

Inside the building, scholars and families are welcomed by scholar artwork from our Top 10 SmartArt award winners and our large, hand-painted Art Club mural. Participation in the SmartArt Consumers Energy competition has proved incredibly successful for Frost scholars. In 2019, Frost MHS scholars placed 1st, 2nd, and 5th in the competition, and in 2021 Frost MHS scholars placed 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 10th. Frost scholars have also won the People’s Choice Award from the public vote.

With our 6th-12th grade scholars immersed in one building, we encourage continuous social, emotional, and academic growth. Scholars work together with their grade level peers and interact with scholars from other grade levels through environmental projects, school activities, field trips, and extracurricular clubs. Many of our scholars also participate in arts, music, and athletics.
